Perpetuating the Objectified Position of the Woman
La Liberté guidant le peuple... is just a hobby, really. But I do what I can.
From the libhotties inbox:To whom it may concern,

Using physical charms to draw attention is exactly what we women have been brainwashed to do. By supporting a sex-driven campaign to attract male attention to yourselves, you are perpetuating the objectified position of the woman. Even though you may be, in some way, disseminating information, is it really worth sacrificing your self-respect? If you really have networked with and met some of the most beautiful, interesting and intelligent women then why undermine 'the female' by using the most base of all attributes, those physical, to pull in support for libertarianism. It is counter-productive and incredibly disappointing. Really? Do you really think people care about what you say because you are pretty or wearing a bikini? Come on. That's what they want us to think, they want to dis-empower us and make us believe that we must use sex to further ourselves and our endeavors. Why? Because we are more powerful. I have a feeling I'm preaching to the choir. I know you know this.

But of course, who am I?

I'm a woman who wants other women of this movement to be role models, not wannabe porn stars; trailblazers, not attention seekers. We have enough problems as it is. Maybe when food starts running out you all will stop seeking attention and start a fucking revolution... as you may know, revolutions don't happen while you are posing and trying to look sexy for a wannabe-professional photographer.

With love and sadness,

My response:

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, but I’ve also received a few messages similar to yours (as have other "hotties"). I’m posting your email and my reply on the website because

  • it's easier than repeating myself, and
  • this isn’t addressed specifically to me. Those "whom it may concern" should be given the opportunity to read it and respond.

“Using physical charms to draw attention is exactly what we women have been brainwashed to do.”

Appreciation for (and celebration of) female attractiveness is not a result of societal brainwashing. It’s the result of evolution over millions of years. We’re drawn to beauty from birth, and there are feminine traits that serve no practical purpose aside from attracting sexual attention. Attractiveness provides an edge, which I have no qualms about utilizing as I do other innate advantages. Like intelligence. In making use of these qualities, I do not automatically represent all women, or all female libertarians.

We’re individualists, are we not?

There are other websites that showcase female libertarians without the visual emphasis, and I intend to link and pay homage. If LibHotties draws more immediate notice, I see no reason to apologize for that.

”By supporting a sex-driven campaign to attract male attention to yourselves, you are perpetuating the objectified position of the woman.”

I’m amused that you think this is all just for "male attention." My primary motivation for creating this site was to satisfy my own interest. When I started seeking out other overt libertarians, I found that almost all of them were men. I, like many other libertarians, wanted to meet more like-minded women.

I enjoy looking at attractive women myself, and I find them that much more attractive for manifesting intelligence, vision, and similar values. In my experience, most people—regardless of gender or sexual orientation—admire feminine beauty.

Objectification is a misleading and absurdly overused term. Do you mean that I’m portraying myself and other women as nothing more than physical objects, to be used, divorced of all other worth? The women presented here share common philosophical ground, as truth-seekers and defenders of freedom who actively defy subjugation. Their pictures link to personal pages and political projects they're involved in, so proof is only a click away. Objectification is clearly not what this site encourages, and any failure to grasp that is a reflection on the observer.

"Even though you may be, in some way, disseminating information, is it really worth sacrificing your self-respect?" “Do you really think people care about what you say because you are pretty or wearing a bikini?”

You seem to conflate my self-respect, which nullifies this kind of shame tack, with your respect, which I currently have little reason to value.  (I mean that as a statement of fact, not a slight.)

No, I don’t expect people to care about what we say because of how we look. People will look, though.  And if this site arouses interest in presented ideas and encourages traffic toward linked sites, great!

“I'm a woman who wants other women of this movement to be role models, not wannabe porn stars;”

How socially engineering of you.

I have nothing against sex as commerce, but it’s a bit of a jump to characterize these ladies as "wannabe pornstars" because they’ve posed for a few non-explicit photos and consented to their display. In fact, some of them identify as live-and-let-live conservatives. (Not to say that there aren’t a few adult entertainers as well, but they aren’t wannabes either.)

If people want porn, they won’t come to this site for it. They may come here for evidence that not all libertarians look like morlocks, however.

“They want to dis-empower us and make us believe that we must use sex to further ourselves and our endeavors.”

Who are “they”? No one has that kind of power over me, not even those who want to disempower us and make us believe that we must de-sex to further ourselves and our endeavors. Mind vs. body is a false dichotomy, and I do not see physicality as necessarily "base."

"Why? Because we are more powerful."

If you really believed this, you'd be less concerned with what "they" want.

I won’t cater to misandrous, priggish conceptualizations of feminism, but I do agree that the political perspectives of women featured here should be given focus. Don’t worry; we’ll elaborate on their views and activism as we flesh out the site, which has been little more than a placeholder so far.

“Maybe when food starts running out you all will stop seeking attention and start a fucking revolution...”

Good luck starting a revolution without seeking any attention.  Meanwhile, I’ll be using attention constructively and enjoying the view. If you want libhotties to link to you, just let me know. ;)
